STEM workshop with Wessex Water
Children in years 3 - 5 recently enjoyed a variety of exciting STEM workshops presented by Sam Russon, education adviser at Wessex Water. These interactive and hands-on sessions were designed to match the curriculum and reinforce the children's learning in school. Topics covered included rivers and the water cycle, treating water and the problem of climate change.
In particular, the children explored the importance of water and learned various ways to conserve it. The workshops aimed to teach children how precious water is, highlighting its vital role in our daily lives and the environment. Participants were taught practical methods to save water with the hope that the children could apply this in their daily lives. They also learned about the processes involved locally in cleaning and treating water before it arrives in our homes. Additionally, the workshops provided insights into the average water usage per person each day.
Matilda (Year 5) said, "I enjoyed being able to watch different experiments and have ago at cleaning the water."
Milo (Year 5) said, "I liked learning how much water we use."
Sholto (Year 5) said, "I liked thinking about the chemical name for water (h2O) and how we clean water."
Herne View are looking forward to welcoming Sam back later this summer to carry out workshops for Year 6. Thanks go to Wessex Water and to Miss Elliott, the school's STEM lead for organising the visit.
