Summer Term 2026
This term, children in Upper Key Stage Two are enjoying a wide range of exciting and purposeful learning opportunities across the curriculum.
As authors, the children are developing their skills in narrative writing, learning how to bring stories to life for the reader. They are focusing on vivid setting descriptions, detailed character development and techniques to build atmosphere and engage their audience. Alongside this, pupils continue to strengthen their understanding of clear instructional writing by sequencing ideas logically, using imperative verbs and including precise details.
We will also be celebrating No Pens Day on Wednesday 20th May, when children will explore and communicate their ideas through talk, drama, movement and practical activities, encouraging creativity and confidence without relying on written work.
In Mathematics, Year 5 and 6 pupils are developing their understanding of Shape, Position and Direction through practical, visual and problem‑solving activities. Children explore properties of shapes, describe positions using coordinates, and use translation, reflection and rotation to move shapes accurately on a grid. Clear mathematical vocabulary is reinforced to help pupils explain their thinking confidently.
- Year 5 pupils also build on their knowledge of decimals, learning to recognise, compare and order decimal numbers, as well as link decimals to fractions and measures.
- Year 6 pupils deepen their understanding by applying shape, position and direction skills to more complex problems, including reasoning with coordinates, interpreting geometric relationships and explaining their methods clearly. These topics help prepare pupils for more advanced mathematical thinking and real‑world applications.
As scientists, the children are learning about human development, exploring how our bodies change as we grow from infancy to old age. They will identify key physical and emotional changes at each life stage and understand how healthy habits support growth and wellbeing.
In History, children are learning about World War II as a major turning point in British history, with a focus on the Battle of Britain and its impact on daily life and national resilience. In Geography, they are exploring the Amazon Rainforest and Brazil, developing their understanding of climate, human and physical features, and the importance of protecting this vital environment.
In RE, the children will focus on learning about Hindu Dharma, developing their understanding of key beliefs, values, traditions and festivals. They will explore how these beliefs influence daily life and reflect on the importance of respect and understanding for different religions and cultures.
There is lots more exciting learning taking place across the curriculum this term, with many opportunities for children to explore, question and develop new skills.
We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term full of learning, exploration and enjoyment.
Spring Term 2026
This term in English, the children will continue to develop their writing skills through a range of genres. They will be producing narrative pieces, while Year 6 pupils will also focus on writing recounts and Year 5 pupils will work on biographical writing.
As part of our wider curriculum, we will be celebrating National Storytelling Week. Throughout the week, the children will take part in a variety of storytelling activities designed to inspire their imagination and strengthen their speaking and listening skills.
In Mathematics, the children will be learning about a wide range of topics, including fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as perimeter, area, volume and statistics. We will also be participating in NSPCC Number Day, celebrating maths through fun, practical activities and problem‑solving challenges.
In Science, the children will explore two key topics: Living Things and Their Habitats and Light.
In History, the children will study ancient Greece, developing their skills as Historians. This links with our work in Design and Technology, where the children will take on the role of Engineers to learn about Greek architecture. In Geography, the children will investigate Tourism in Greece, exploring its impact on the country and how tourism can be managed sustainably.
In Religious Education, the children will be learning about two important themes: Gospels and Salvation.

Autumn Term 2025
What a busy opening to the year we have already had. Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher via ClassDojo if you need to ask a question and they will aim to get back to you within two school days (but hopefully quicker). If you need to message about change of pickup / absence then please ensure you contact the school office directly on 01460 52686.
Please remember, as part of their weekly homework, all children are expected to practice their times tables through the TT Rockstars website or APP for a minimum of 20 minutes (four lots of five minutes ideally rather than one long chunk!) and teachers monitor this weekly. There are also certificates given out during our weekly celebration assembly for the best class and children. There is a parent guide and video What is Times Tables Rock Stars? Parents and Carers Guide (youtube.com) which helps explain the different game versions within TT Rockstars as some allow children to pick the times tables they get given (they often pick the ones they know) whilst others use their previous answers to determine which they need to practice more.
Please have a look at the latest information regarding our Reading Expectations that is found below as updated by Mr Whitfield in a message to parents in October 2024. We now expect all children to read for a minimum of five times a week for 10 minutes each time, this can be through listening to and reading texts. Please ensure you sign their reading records weekly for all these occasions and these are subsequently checked in school. We do offer the children the opportunity to read within the school day at our daily morning reading club.
Year 6 parents/careers, your children will be receiving extra weekly pieces of homework for a few reasons. Firstly, to ensure that they are getting ready for their transition onto secondary schools next year, but also to give them extra opportunities to prepare for their SATs papers which they will be sitting in May 2026.
This year we are beginning a brand-new way to teach our writing curriculum (alongside phonics, spellings and handwriting!). If you hear the term 'chotting' do not worry... your child is using a term we use in class that is a mix of quality chatting or discussions and jotting ideas down. We hope this new way of teaching will inspire many children to gain a love of writing.
