Art

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” — Edgar Degas

Why do we teach Art?

At Herne View, Art provides children with meaningful opportunities to let their light shine through creativity, expression, and imagination. Art supports our Christian values of care, respect and friendship, helping pupils to value their own ideas while appreciating the creativity and contributions of others.

Art nurtures confidence, resilience, and pride in achievement. By exploring a wide range of artistic styles and cultures, children learn to respect diversity and understand the world around them. Creative activities also support emotional wellbeing, communication, and problem‑solving, enriching learning across the curriculum.

How do we teach Art?

Art is taught through a carefully sequenced and inclusive curriculum that enables pupils to build knowledge and skills progressively. Lessons are practical, engaging, and accessible to all learners.

Pupils are taught to:

· Use a range of materials, tools, and techniques

· Develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media

· Learn about artists, designers, and craftspeople from different cultures and periods

· Reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others

Children are encouraged to take creative risks in a supportive environment where effort and perseverance are valued. We promote independence, collaboration, and respect for resources, helping pupils to build positive relationships and confidence.

By the time pupils leave Herne View Primary School, they will have developed a love of Art, confidence in their creative abilities, and the belief that their ideas matter - ready to continue letting their light shine.

Sasviru - I enjoy Art as I get to be creative.

Alice - I can see all the progress I’ve made by looking in my book.

Octavia - Art lessons are fun because we get to explore the paints and pastels.

Kiera - I liked drawing myself.
