STEM
“The important thing is not to stop questioning." – Albert Einstein
Why do we teach STEM?
At Herne View Church of England Primary School, we believe that STEM inspires creativity and problem-solving in our learners. We aim to provide every young person with the knowledge and scientific skills to explore this subject in an inclusive and engaging environment. Additionally, we strive to prepare our learners to become part of a sustainable and increasingly technologically advanced future.
At Herne View, we also believe that STEM plays a crucial role in nurturing spirituality by fostering a sense of wonder and awe in our learner's minds.
We are incredibly lucky to have a large, dedicated STEM room, plus a cookery suite (resources which are rare for a primary school).
How do we Teach STEM?
STEM is taught as a practical, enquiry-based subject, with close links between Science and Design and Technology (D.T.) evident. Science focuses on developing our learner's understanding of the natural world through observation, investigation and experimentation. In D.T., pupils are able to design, make and evaluate a range of products using various materials and techniques.
The teaching of STEM aims to ensure that all pupils:
develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
