Reading

Being a Reader at Herne View

"Reading is the gateway for children that makes all other learning possible."

— Barack Obama

A reader is someone who develops a passion for reading with each book they explore. This doesn’t mean they must enjoy every book, but rather appreciate the knowledge, journeys, and new worlds that reading reveals.

At Herne View we think carefully about the books we read, both to improve our knowledge and understanding of the world and those we read just for pleasure.

We aim to provide our children with a rich and varied diet of high-quality, challenging literature in order to prepare them for their secondary school, foster a love of reading and inspire them to want to read more.

With this in mind we have developed our own school ‘Core’ Reading Spine. Our Reading Spine is a list of books which all children will experience as they move though our school. Our reading spine will be reviewed each year and updated accordingly to ensure it meets the needs of our pupils in this ever changing world.

At Herne, we make daily story time a really special part of the school day. Children love listening to adults read, and this helps them build their vocabulary, develop their imagination and discover new favourite books. In Reception and KS1, we also enjoy sharing a variety of rhymes and poems together. Through daily stories, rhymes and poems, we aim to nurture children who not only become confident readers, but who also develop a lifelong love of books.
