Dove and Pippin Class News
You will find updates on tapestry. If you do not have access to Tapestry please contact Mr Langdon or the school office and we will sort this for you. Termly newsletters and knowledge organisers can be found on this page and hope that you find them useful in supporting your child’s learning at home or in just giving you an insight into what we get up to in Reception at Herne View.
Spring Term 2 2026
Welcome back to our Spring 2 term. We are looking forward to applying all of our learning in phonics into our reading. Some children have now got Phase 3 books which is a massive achievement and we are very proud of them. If your child has not got a phase 3 book please do not worry. For children to change book level they need to be comfortable with the previous and able to read 90% of the book fluency which means reading the word without sounding out. Pushing children on to higher levels when they are not ready can have a detrimental effect on their love of reading. Please try to read everyday with your child, it does not matter if it is a couple of pages or the whole book it still counts!
Handwriting is a big focus for us this term. We will be doing lots of practice to support their fine motor skills and holding our pencils correctly. Remember Pinch, Grip, Flip! By getting the fine motor right now we help support them in developing a fluent writing style which will be so important as they grow.
This term our RE learning will focus on the Easter story and learning about the journey and traditions assosiated with Easter. We will also be learning about the festival of colours Holi and having lots of fun with this!
We are so excited to be able to spend more time outside in provision now that the weather is improving and will be beggining to look at changes and growing after our observations of Autumn and Winter.
Spring Term 1 2026
Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you all had an exciting and fun filled holiday and got some much needed rest! This term always goes incredibly quickly and is packed with lots of exciting things!
This term we will be continuing our phonics learning and we will be moving onto phase 3 sounds. This includes lots of new diagraphs (two letters one sound) and we will be learning our first trigraph (Three letters one sound) we will be working on recognising these and then applying them to our reading and writing.
We are also continuing our 'The Write Stuff' journey and we will be learning about Jack and the Jelly Bean Stalk and seeing if we can apply our phonics when we are writing.
Within maths we will be looking at the numbers to 10 in more depth and will begin to use addition and subtraction language.
Autumn Term 2 2025
Welcome back to our Autumn 2 term. This is an incredibly busy term so please keep an eye on Tapestry for updates as there are many events in the coming weeks. Tapestry also now has the chat feature enabled which will be used for quick messaged to you. You can also contact your class teacher via this but if it is an urgent message such as pick up changes, or illness you will still need to contact the office.
We have already had a very successful bonfire day to celebrate the 5th of November- We made firework and bonfire pictures, learnt some campfire songs, did some interpretive dance and music sessions all linked to fireworks and bonfires. Hopefully you have already been told what a great day it was!
We are updating our reading books and many children will be coming home with books with words. Please continue to support their reading journey by using the home sheets with the new sounds and words and by sharing the reading books every day. When they are collected in on Thursday please use this evening to practice the home sheets or share your favourite story book.
Christmas is fast approaching we will be sharing your child's lines for nativity and the songs please help us by learning them at home.
Autumn Term 1 2025
Thank you all for a successful start to the Autumn term! All. Please feel free to choose which gate you would like to come in via in the morning. Miss Crouch is normally at the Silver street gate so this may be helpful if your child needs a familiar face. We ask that all children come into school independently as we have found children settle much easier in school with a quick transition into school. We realise that many children are getting very tired from the school day and are emotional as a result they are fine once they get into school and start their day.

Little Wandle

We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds to teach or phonics, spelling and guided reading sessions. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you actually have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. By then end of KS1, children are expected to read age-appropriate texts fluently and with expression while demonstrating comprehension by retelling stories, identifying main ideas, and answering questions. Therefore, to support this, we suggest that you should aim for 5 reading sessions at home each week. This could be your child reading to you or you reading to your child. Please make sure you record what you or your child has read in their reading record.
There are two types of reading books that your child will bring home each week (once they are ready):
Decodable Little Wandle book
This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level and they have already been exposed to this book in class in their reading sessions that week. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
Sharing book of their choice
In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
