Why do we teach Careers Education?
At Herne View, we teach careers education to help children understand the wide and exciting world of work from an early age. Research shows that children begin forming ideas about their future while still in primary school, often influenced by the jobs they see around them. By introducing a broad range of role models and opportunities, we help pupils challenge stereotypes, raise aspirations, and recognise that any career can be open to them regardless of background, gender, or ability.
Careers education also helps children see the purpose of their learning and develop important life skills. By linking lessons to real-world examples, pupils understand how subjects like maths, reading, science, and art are used every day in different jobs. Alongside this, children learn teamwork, communication, problem‑solving, and confidence—skills that support their education now and prepare them for the future.
How Do We Teach Careers Education?
Careers education is brought to life through inspiring real‑world experiences and meaningful encounters with a wide variety of professionals. Each year we celebrate National Careers Week by inviting guest speakers to talk to the children about their careers, giving pupils the chance to ask thoughtful questions and deepen their understanding of the world of work. These visits help broaden children’s horizons and challenge stereotypes by showing them the many different paths their futures could take.
We also enrich our careers curriculum through our involvement with Somerset Dream Big and our use of the MyPath programme. This allows us to offer career‑focused trips and provide high‑quality videos and resources that link every school subject to real jobs and the skills they require. Whether exploring science, art, PE, or computing, children are encouraged to connect their learning to future opportunities, helping them see the relevance of their education and develop early aspirations for the world beyond primary school.
