Our Learning Journey in KS1 - Previous Terms
A Look Back at Our Spring 1 Journey 2026
In the Spring 1 term, the children developed their skills as authors by gradually writing a short narrative based on the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood, as well as acting as researchers when they wrote a non‑fiction report about castles. As part of our wider curriculum, we celebrated National Storytelling Week, where the children took part in storytelling activities that supported their imagination, speaking and listening skills. As Mathematicians, the children continued to develop their understanding of place value within 100, explored grouping and sharing for multiplication and division, and measured and compared lengths, with learning carefully matched to each year group.
As Scientists, the children investigated and experimented with materials to understand their properties, while in History they learnt as Historians by exploring castles and discovering the significance of William the Conqueror and his impact on Britain. As Engineers, they designed and created a 3D model of a castle well. In Religious Education, the children learnt about the Holy Trinity and what this meant for Christians. As Musicians and Computer Scientists, they used technology to create music using the Purple Mash 2Simple software.
Alongside our curriculum learning, the children took part in several exciting events. These included the KS1 Dragon Dance Workshop on 29th January 2026, National Storytelling Week during the week commencing 2nd February 2026, NSPCC Numbers Day on 6th February 2026, and Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 10th February. Classes also attended their termly Forest School sessions.
A Look Back at Our Autumn Term 2 Journey 2025
As Artists, we studied the types of houses that were built during the time of the Great Fire, we looked at artwork that showed the Great Fire and used collage to create our own Great Fire of London art piece. As Scientists we focused our enquiries on the human body and the five senses, as well as observing the seasonal changes as Autumn transitioned into Winter. It was a term full of creativity, curiosity, and discovery!
Events we all took part in:
- KS1 and EYFS Firework Day – a celebration full of drama, dance, and the creative arts.
- STEM Water Workshop - an engaging workshop led by Wessex Water.
- Parent Christmas Craft Morning – a festive opportunity for families to get creative together.
- KS1 Nativity Performances – where our young stars shone on stage in the magical retelling of a Christmas story
A Look Back at Our Autumn Term 1 Journey 2025
The children settled into the new term wonderfully and showed great enthusiasm for our learning topics. Last term, we explored our local county town of Taunton in Geography, discovering what made it special and how it connected to our lives.
In Art, we dived into the world of landscapes, using different materials and techniques to express the beauty of nature. Our Science lessons focused on food chains and animal classes, helping us understand how living things depend on each other.
In RE, we thought deeply about what Christians believe God looks like, encouraging thoughtful discussion and creativity. We also celebrated the Harvest Festival at the Minster. This was a lovely opportunity to come together as a school community!
