School Council Q&A with the Mayor

Recently student council representatives from Key Stage 2 had the pleasure and important job of quizzing Ilminster’s Mayor, Cllr Brian Hamilton, with questions posed from the wider school community. All student councillors, from across the school, had studied our mayor’s online biography and learnt that before moving to Ilminster he had travelled the world working within the Royal Navy. This engaged many of our pupils, who have family of their own in the armed forces. They also then studied what our town council does and learnt they have a very varied portfolio of responsibilities from overseeing public benches and playgrounds to maintaining churchyards and ensuring the weekly market runs smoothly! Over 20 questions were asked in our hour-long meeting. Many focussed on Town Council issues which were felt to be particularly important to our pupils. Some of the questions asked included:
•    Are the graveyard’s in Ilminster helping boost our local nature and biodiversity?
•    Are you planning on adding more sports courts next to the tennis courts?
•    What is your favourite part about Herne Hill?
•    Are there any soldiers buried in the town’s cemetery?
And
•    What are your hopes for Herne View Church of England Primary School?
The information gathered from the answers to the questions asked by the student council to the mayor will be shared with our pupils and the whole student council would like to thank the mayor for his time.
